Four Activities For The Whole Family

On a random Tuesday evening, my brothers and I went to play tennis. When we pulled up, the parking lot was packed. As we got out of the car, I saw that there were probably twenty people using two full tennis courts to play pickleball. I was amazed, first, at how many people were there, but second, how many different types of players were playing. There were young children all the way to retirees playing doubles pickleball and the best part was seeing how much fun they were all having!

This got me thinking, "What other activities do we have around Jefferson City that people would be interested in knowing about?" Voila...the idea for this blog post was created! There are so many activities for people to try around town, so I chose a few to share with you!

Horseshoes

One night, after watching the Renegades baseball team play, I was walking to my car and saw some horseshoe pits right by Vivion Field. I hadn't noticed them before, so with this blog post in mind, I was intrigued. I went home and searched for horseshoe leagues in Jefferson City and was pleased to find Capital City Horseshoe Club on Facebook. I got in contact with Mel Bruemmer, who runs the club, and he invited me to come watch them play and take some photos.

The Capital City Horseshoe Club has different leagues and plays all year round. During the winter they travel to different cities to use indoor pits, however, from the end of March until September, they have leagues going on here in Jefferson City. They also have tournaments once a month from March until September.

Tennis

The popularity of tennis has grown over the years in Jefferson City. Both Helias and Jefferson City High School have had solid tennis programs over the years, and there is a core group of people who consistently play at the YMCA indoor courts, Washington Park, and Lincoln University.

It is a sport that can be frustrating, especially when you keep hitting the ball over the fence and out of the court. However, once you get the hang of it, it is a great lifelong sport.

Pickleball

The truth is, I didn't realize how popular Pickleball is around Jefferson City.  There are multiple leagues that you can join almost any day of the week. It is a great way to get some exercise and just have fun with friends and family. The Linc provides multiple leagues and they are always looking for more players.

This is a great sport if you are looking for something to get the whole family involved. I have seen entire families out on the court playing and having a blast!
